Tyne United Great Torch Row

June 17, 2012 Comments off

The Olympic Torch reached the Tyne on Friday June 15th. The club liaised with the River Police and Port of Tyne and 35 members and two guests rowed from the club to the Bridges in the middle of Town. The weather forecast for the day was appalling, but as crews boated at 5.30 pm what turned out to be the last of the pouring rain passed over, the water was nice and flat and the Octuple, 2VIII’s and a IV headed for town..We all assembled at the Swing Bridge and took our instructions from the River Police to proceed to the Millennium Bridge.

The crews were given a rousing welcome by the crowds massed to see the torch descend from the Tyne Bridge. We had a fantastic view of the whole event as demonstrated by the amazing footage taken by Paul. This can be seen at http://vimeo.com/44163126 – it graphically demonstrates what a fantastic part of the world we live in.

All crews returned safely to the club at 8.30pm to be met by pasta supper prepared by Tracey and Roger. A huge thank you to them both from starving rowers after 22k of rowing and to our safety launch drivers.

A final big thank you to Chris who had the idea in the first place and once he realised we could row down on an outgoing tide and come back on the incoming tide. He then liaised with the authorities to ensure we had a safe and enjoyable row that everyone will remember.

Victor Ludorum for Tyne United

Victor Ludorum Hexham 2012

Bill Parker(President DARC) presenting J14 4x+ with the VL Trophy

Saturday morning of Hexham Regatta on Saturday JUne 2nd  started uneventfully enough for Martin, Kev, Chris and Barbara as they set off with two trailers along the A 69 to Hexham. The calm of the morning and Barbaras usual early morning stupor were rapidly shattered as the traffic on the A69 came grinding to a halt. A very bad accident had closed the west bound carriageway with most of the boat trailers heading for Hexham Regatta all within 200 yards of one another. Communication worked very fast and it soon became clear that the road was going to be closed for hours. Great team work then ensued to manually turn trailers round ( interesting alternative race warm up) and head back to town to start the trip along the south bank. Trailers finally arriving at 9.30 am after a 7 am start.

Once racing was under way a great day in the hstory of Tyne United started to unfold with crews from all squads within the club reaching semis and finals. I do  not intend to list  all the winners but suffice it to say there were some fantastic results and we were finally presented with the Victor Ludorum trophy at 7pm on Saturday evening. This is a pointer to the significant development over the three years of rowing on the water of competitive rowing across all squads within the club. Our base is gradually developing and I am sure we can look forward to greater things in the future.

A big thank you to all our coaches Richard, Steve, Alan and Angela for all their hard work . Where would we be without coaches???

Success at Hexham Regatta 2012!

June 2, 2012 Comments off

Well done to all those who raced at Hexham Regatta this weekend, the club achieved some really good results including winning the Victor Ludorum award! It started off as a day of uncertainty as we were all wondering when the trailers would arrive with  boats due to an accident on the A69, but thankfully the event got underway and made up time throughout the day to finish on time with prize giving concluding the days racing. Juniors, Seniors, Masters and Northumbria students all raced at the event, with some really good results including several wins, with many losing Novice status, it was a great turn out from all club members and all in all a great day for the club by picking up several medals (I was lost off at one point as to who had won what!) and the Victor Ludorum award  for the first time! Great effort by all, great atmosphere and a great days racing for Tyne United, a big thank you to all those who attended for support, thanks also go out to the coaches and to Martin and Chris for towing the trailers to the event, this included some tricky manoeuvring on the a69 this morning! A full race report of all events and photos will follow!
